Adjusting back to civilian life is a challenge for any military veteran, especially when it comes to finding gainful employment. The Solar Foundation has partnered with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s “Hiring Our Heroes” program, the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) to launch two workforce development programs for transitioning military service members and veterans.
Instead of focusing on installation-only jobs, the program is a series of 12-week long work-based learning programs dedicated to management and professional aspects of workforce development. Known as the Solar Ready Vets Fellowship Program, it is aimed at hundreds of transitioning and former service members from 10 different military bases in regions with high demand for solar workers. Some of the bases participating include Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in NJ (US Air Force, Army, and Navy), Fort Bragg in NC (US Army), Naval Station Norfolk in VA (US Navy), Camp Pendleton in CA (US Marine Corps), and Eglin Air Force Base in FL (US Air Force).
The other program, Solar Opportunities and Readiness (SOAR), will enable veterans to focus on solar training, training providers, and workforce development networks. This will happen in networks where there is a high demand for solar workers.
Both programs are looking to increase veteran representation in the workforce. The “U.S. Solar Industry Diversity Study 2019” mentions that only 17% of all solar companies have put forth efforts to employ veterans. And, according to energy.gov, returning veterans comprise 7.8% of the solar workforce (or roughly 19,000 people), which exceeds 6.6% of veterans in the rest of the U.S. workforce.
What makes a veteran perfect for employment in the solar industry? As trained leaders, veterans are mission-focused and total team players that possess a strong work ethic. They’re a natural fit!
